For the first time, a Latin American country–Argentina–is hosting World Blood Donor Day. Argentina rang in the day with a free public performance of “Dracula the Musical” to put people in good spirits as the blood donation drive began.

World Blood Donor Day, annual international event designed to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and to thank donors, involved over 1,000 special guests and witnesses.

According to the Argentine government, 40 percent of its population gives blood on the condition that they are familiar with a particular case or person that needs blood, instead of donating regularly to help keep reserves up. The country is hoping that this awareness-raising event will help change that, as people realize that just one person’s donation can save up to four lives!
